Iran Labels EU Armies ‘Terrorist Groups’ After IRGC Designation

Iran’s parliament has declared the armed forces of European Union countries as “terrorist groups” in response to the EU’s decision to list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation. The move was announced by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf during a session where lawmakers showed support for the IRGC.

Escalation After EU Action

The EU formally added the IRGC to its terrorist list on January 29, marking a policy shift in response to Iran’s harsh crackdown on widespread protests that have drawn international criticism. Iran’s retaliatory designation of European militaries reflects growing tensions between Tehran and Western capitals.

Retaliatory Measures and Rhetoric

Iran’s parliament cited a law allowing “counter-measures” after the EU’s action, though it did not detail any specific sanctions or legal consequences for the new designation. Lawmakers also discussed possible actions concerning EU military attachés in Tehran. Iranian officials have criticised the EU decision, calling it provocative and harmful to diplomatic relations.

At the same time, broader regional tensions persist, with warnings from Iranian leadership about potential conflict if foreign powers take hostile actions against the country.
