IPL 2025: Franchises Seek Clarity from BCCI Over Player Retention Rules

Mumbai, India: As preparations for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season begin, the ten participating franchises have requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to clarify the player retention policies.

This comes amid uncertainty regarding retention rules and associated player fees for the upcoming three-year cycle.

With the deadline for submitting the list of retained players set for October 31, several franchises have reportedly written to the BCCI seeking clarification on aspects such as player retention, player fees, match fees, performance bonuses, and the application of the Right to Match (RTM) card.

Sources suggest that franchises are unsure about the revised retention rules, which allow teams to retain up to six players, including a maximum of two uncapped players. The new pricing structure has also been outlined: INR 18 crore for Player 1, INR 14 crore for Player 2, INR 11 crore for Player 3, INR 18 crore for Player 4, INR 14 crore for Player 5, and INR 4 crore for an uncapped player.

Despite the detailed pricing, various franchises have voiced concerns that the current retention policy guidelines have been interpreted differently by each team, leading to confusion. The franchises have urged the BCCI to address these discrepancies and provide a definitive explanation of the rules before the retention deadline.

This confusion around retention rules and player fees has placed additional pressure on franchises as they finalize their squads for IPL 2025.
