Internet Ban Extended After Cuttack Clashes
The Odisha government has extended suspension of internet services in Cuttack until 7 p.m. on October 7, following violent clashes in the city that left over 30 people injured.
What Triggered the Ban
The clashes erupted in Dargha Bazaar after a religious procession and a VHP bike rally passed through restricted zones. Protests escalated when police intervened. Authorities say provocative messages on social media contributed to tensions, and thus the ban is aimed at curbing the spread of inflammatory content.
Scale of the Unrest
In the two incidents between Friday night and Sunday evening, at least 31 individuals, including 10 police officers, were hurt. The second disturbance involved stone-throwing after police blocked the rally’s passage.
Government Measures
In addition to the internet ban, a 36-hour curfew was imposed in Cuttack to restore order. The suspension covers most public internet services but excludes government networks, banking systems, railways, and essential services. Violators may face legal action under relevant laws.
Officials say the extension is necessary to prevent circulation of misleading or hateful messages that can escalate violence. Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the sources of provocative content and identifying individuals responsible.
