Intel to Lay Off 4,000 Workers in July Restructuring
Leading chipmaker Intel is set to lay off approximately 4,000 employees across the United States, with around 2,400 jobs being cut in Oregon alone. The layoffs are part of a major restructuring effort aimed at reducing costs and improving operational efficiency.
Oregon Hit Hardest by Cuts
The majority of the job losses are concentrated at Intel’s campuses in Hillsboro and Aloha, Oregon, where engineering and manufacturing roles are being significantly downsized. These include software engineers, manufacturing technicians, product designers, and corporate support staff.
Layoffs to Begin Mid-July
The affected employees have been issued notices under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. The job cuts are expected to take effect starting July 15, with each employee reportedly receiving at least nine weeks of severance pay and benefits.
Intel’s Ongoing Challenges
Intel’s new CEO has acknowledged that the company has slipped from its former dominance in the semiconductor industry. With rising competition and stagnant revenues, Intel has already reduced its global workforce by over 15,000 roles since 2023. The latest layoffs reflect a broader effort to simplify Intel’s corporate structure and focus more on product innovation and technology leadership.
Strategic Shifts Underway
Intel has also begun winding down its automotive chip division, while outsourcing non-core functions to external partners. These changes are aimed at restoring profitability and regaining competitiveness in a rapidly evolving semiconductor market.
