Indonesia Condemns Israeli Death Penalty Law
Indonesia has joined growing international criticism of Israel’s newly passed death penalty law, calling it unacceptable and accusing it of violating basic humanitarian and legal principles. The law has drawn sharp reactions because critics say it is designed to apply overwhelmingly to Palestinians tried in military courts, while Jewish Israelis accused of similar crimes would not face the same legal process in practice.
Indonesia Condemns Israel Law
Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said the policy undermines justice and universal humanitarian values. In a statement shared on social media, the ministry said the law represents a serious violation of international human rights and humanitarian law. Jakarta also argued that the measure deepens legal discrimination at a time when global concern over Palestinian rights is already high.
Israeli Death Penalty Law Sparks Criticism
The law, passed by Israel’s parliament this week, mandates the death penalty by hanging for Palestinians convicted in military courts of deadly attacks classified as nationalist violence. Although supporters argue the law is framed in broader legal terms, critics say its structure and jurisdiction mean it will apply almost entirely to Palestinians in the occupied territories rather than to Jewish Israelis. That has made the law one of the most controversial measures passed by the current Israeli government.
International Law And Human Rights Concerns
Indonesia said the law violates the Fourth Geneva Convention and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both of which protect the right to life and fair trial standards. Similar concerns have also been raised internationally over due process, discrimination and the speed with which executions could be carried out under the legislation. The issue is now becoming a wider diplomatic flashpoint as more countries and rights bodies condemn the law and warn that it could deepen tensions in the region.
