IndiGo Says Operations Stable After Major Disruptions

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said the airline has returned to stable operations after a week of cancellations and delays. He stated that flights are now running as scheduled and the situation has “normalised” across the network. The comments come after a period of turbulence that affected thousands of passengers during peak travel days.

What caused the crisis

The disruption began when new pilot duty and rest rules were enforced. The change required more crew availability than the airline had planned for. Flight schedules were heavily affected, and more than 2,000 departures were cancelled in just a few days. The airline cited a combination of rostering mistakes, higher fatigue norms, and operational pressure.

Ongoing review and regulatory action

The airline has started an internal review to identify what led to the crisis. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has also intervened. The regulator asked IndiGo to reduce its winter schedule by around five percent to avoid fresh disruptions. Officials said safety and passenger convenience must be prioritised.

Passenger impact and way forward

During the worst days, airport queues increased and many travellers were stranded or forced to rebook flights. IndiGo has restored services to most stations and on-time performance now stands close to pre-crisis levels. The airline said it will focus on planning and building buffer capacity so similar issues do not repeat.
