India’s Top Gaming Apps Halt Real-Money Games
India’s Parliament has passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, which bans all online games involving real-money play. The government said the measure was necessary to address risks of addiction, financial losses, and psychological harm. The new law also prohibits related advertisements and restricts payment services tied to wagering platforms.
Popular Apps Suspend Real-Money Features
In response, leading gaming platforms such as Dream11, PokerBaazi, Mobile Premier League (MPL), My11Circle, and Zupee have suspended their money-based offerings. Dream11 announced that it was halting its “Pay to Play” contests and assured users that their existing balances and accounts remained secure. Other companies followed with similar statements, confirming compliance with the new law.
Industry Faces Major Setback
The move marks a significant blow to India’s online gaming industry, which had been projected to reach a valuation of $3.6 billion by 2029. Dream11, the sector’s most valuable company at around $8 billion, and MPL, valued at $2.5 billion, are among the worst hit. Gaming-related stocks also fell sharply following news of the ban, with Nazara Tech experiencing steep losses on the markets.
Legal Challenges Likely
Several gaming firms are preparing to challenge the new legislation in the Supreme Court. Industry representatives argue that the law was passed without adequate consultation and fails to distinguish between skill-based games, such as poker or fantasy contests, and pure games of chance.
Companies Explore Alternatives
As real-money formats shut down, firms are looking at alternative business models. Many are expected to pivot toward e-sports, fantasy gaming without cash involvement, and subscription-based services. Executives say these steps will be crucial to keeping the industry afloat while legal battles play out.
