India’s Nyoma Airbase Near China Border Activated

India has officially declared the Nyoma airbase in eastern Ladakh operational, marking a major enhancement of its military infrastructure near the border with China. Located at an altitude of around 13,700 feet and roughly 35 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the activation provides the Indian Air Force (IAF) with a forward hub to deploy troops, equipment and logistics more rapidly.

Operational Capabilities And Purpose

The upgraded Nyoma base features a runway capable of handling heavy transport aircraft in extreme high‐altitude conditions. This allows faster mobilisation of forces in regions such as the Pangong Tso, Demchok and Depsang sectors, where border tensions with China have remained high. The airbase is expected to function alongside other key Ladakh facilities such as Leh, Kargil and Thoise.

Regional Implications

The activation comes amid increased Indian military readiness along the northern frontier. Observers note that establishing such an airfield close to the LAC enhances both deterrence and responsiveness. The move signals to Beijing that New Delhi is reinforcing its strategic posture in the Himalayas.
