India’s milk production recorded a 4% increase, reaching 239.3 million tonnes in the financial year 2023-24, as per Union Minister Parshottam Rupala.
The Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying attributed the growth to the government’s initiatives in bolstering the dairy sector, which continues to play a vital role in the rural economy.
Steady Growth in Milk Output
Union Minister Rupala presented the figures while addressing the Lok Sabha, emphasizing the consistent growth of milk production in India. In 2022-23, the country produced 230.52 million tonnes, and the latest figures demonstrate a steady rise, further cementing India’s position as the world’s largest milk producer.
Government Initiatives Boost Dairy Sector
The Union Minister credited schemes such as the National Programme for Dairy Development and the Rashtriya Gokul Mission for improving productivity and infrastructure in the dairy industry. He added that these programs focus on enhancing indigenous cattle breeds, providing veterinary services, and increasing the availability of nutritious feed and fodder.
Dairy Sector’s Contribution
The dairy sector remains a significant contributor to the Indian economy, providing livelihood opportunities to millions, particularly in rural areas. Women form a substantial part of the workforce in the sector, playing a key role in livestock care and milk production.
The Ministry further highlighted that milk production’s annual growth rate in the last five years has averaged around 6.2%, demonstrating the sector’s resilience and potential for continued expansion.
India’s rising milk production reflects the effectiveness of focused policy measures and the dedication of stakeholders across the value chain.
