India’s First ‘Made in India’ Chip to Be Produced in Assam

In a landmark announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed that India’s first domestically produced semiconductor chip will be manufactured at the Tata Group’s semiconductor assembly plant in Assam. The declaration was made during the Rising Northeast Investors Summit 2025, reflecting the government’s strategic push to transform the Northeast into a high-tech industrial hub.

Tata Group’s ₹27,000 Crore Bet on Assam

The Tata Group’s semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, Assam, launched in August 2024, is being developed with an investment of ₹27,000 crore. The plant is expected to produce 4.83 crore semiconductor chips per day and marks a major milestone in India’s ambition to become self-reliant in chip manufacturing.

This facility will be India’s first full-fledged unit producing ‘Made in India’ chips, signaling the start of domestic capability in a sector traditionally dominated by global giants.

Northeast as a Semiconductor Powerhouse

During the summit, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the strategic importance of locating such a facility in the Northeast. He noted that regions once considered remote and underdeveloped are now at the forefront of technological growth.

The PM emphasized how infrastructure improvements—including better roads, logistics, and electricity supply—are catalyzing industrial growth in Assam and beyond. He called this transition a “frontier to frontrunner” transformation that reflects a broader vision for balanced regional development.

Strategic Collaborations to Build an Ecosystem

The semiconductor initiative is part of a larger vision where India aims to capture a significant share of the global chip market. The Tata Group is also in talks with global companies like Analog Devices to enhance capabilities in chip design and fabrication, ensuring long-term viability and scalability.

Such international partnerships are essential for India to build a robust semiconductor ecosystem that can rival global leaders like Taiwan and South Korea in the years to come.
