India’s First Indigenous Semiconductor Chip Set for 2025 Launch
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has announced that India’s inaugural ‘Made in India’ semiconductor chip is slated for release in 2025. This update was shared during the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Vaishnaw highlighted the robust confidence industry stakeholders have in India’s semiconductor initiatives.
The minister emphasized the nation’s progression to the next phase of its semiconductor program, focusing on attracting equipment manufacturers, material suppliers, and designers to establish operations within India. He underscored the necessity of advancing material purity standards from parts per million to parts per billion, a transformative process that the industry is actively pursuing.
This development aligns with the Indian government’s commitment to positioning the country as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub. In December 2021, the Semicon India programme was approved, allocating ₹76,000 crore to foster a semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem. The initiative aims to provide financial incentives to companies investing in these sectors, bolstering India’s presence in the global semiconductor market.
Significant foreign investments have been attracted to support this vision. Notably, Micron Technology is establishing a $2.75 billion assembly and testing facility in Gujarat, projected to generate 5,000 direct employment opportunities and an additional 15,000 community jobs. These strategic moves are anticipated to propel India’s semiconductor market to an estimated $63 billion by 2026, reflecting the nation’s growing prominence in the global technology landscape.
