India’s Defence Output Hits Record ₹1.5 Lakh Crore

India’s defence production reached a record ₹1,50,590 crore in the financial year 2024–25, marking an 18% increase from the previous year’s ₹1.27 lakh crore. Compared to 2019–20, production has nearly doubled, showing a 90% growth that highlights rapid expansion in domestic manufacturing.

Why It Matters

This milestone reflects India’s growing self-reliance in defence, supported by initiatives under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission. The surge in production reduces dependence on imports and strengthens the country’s strategic capabilities.

Public and Private Sectors Both Grow

The public sector continues to lead, contributing about 77% of the total output. The private sector’s share rose to 23%, up from 21% the year before. Public-sector production grew by 16%, while private industry recorded a stronger 28% increase, indicating rising investment and capability in private defence manufacturing.

Exports Also Climb

India’s defence exports touched an all-time high of ₹23,622 crore in 2024–25, a 12% increase compared to the previous year. This reflects the country’s growing role as a competitive supplier in the global defence market.
