Indians Losing Touch With Native Languages: Bhagwat
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has expressed concern that many Indians are gradually losing connection with their mother tongues. Speaking at a book launch event in Nagpur, he said that an increasing number of people cannot speak or understand basic words in their native languages as English becomes more dominant in daily life.
Cultural Meaning Lost in Translation, Says RSS Chief
Bhagwat noted that several traditional concepts and values lose depth when translated into English. He said that even at home, many families mix English heavily with regional languages, weakening natural fluency. He added that it is ironic that in some cases foreign scholars are teaching Indian languages, while many Indians struggle to preserve their own linguistic heritage.
Call for Revival of Mother Tongues
Urging society to introspect, Bhagwat said native languages should be used more consciously in households, schools and cultural spaces. He stressed that preserving India’s linguistic richness depends on people actively speaking and passing on their languages to the next generation.
Concerns Over Linguistic Diversity
With India home to hundreds of languages and dialects, experts say declining usage threatens long-term survival of many regional tongues. Bhagwat said linguistic pride must be nurtured if cultural diversity is to be preserved in a globalised world.
