Indian Navy Commissions Indigenous ASW Vessel INS Mahe
The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Mahe, the first vessel in the Mahe-class anti-submarine warfare shallow-water craft (ASW-SWC) series. The commissioning ceremony was held at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai and attended by senior military leadership. The ship will operate under the Western Naval Command.
Built With High Indigenous Content
INS Mahe has been designed and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited with more than 80% indigenous components. The vessel is optimised for anti-submarine operations in coastal and shallow regions. It is equipped with advanced sonar systems, lightweight torpedoes, ASW rockets and mine-laying capabilities. Its shallow draught allows high manoeuvrability in littoral waters.
Boost To India’s Coastal Security
The induction of INS Mahe strengthens India’s coastal defence and improves the Navy’s ability to counter underwater threats near the mainland and island territories. The Mahe-class will include eight ships in total, which will gradually replace older Abhay-class vessels. The project also supports the broader ‘Make in India’ push in defence shipbuilding.
