Indian Government Orders 3 Hour Removal Of Deepfakes
The government has introduced new rules requiring rapid removal of objectionable AI-generated content and mandatory labelling of deepfakes, tightening regulatory oversight of synthetic media online.
India Deepfake Rules Removal Deadline
Under the updated guidelines, platforms must remove reported objectionable deepfake content within three hours of receiving a valid complaint. Authorities said the strict timeline is intended to prevent viral spread of manipulated media that could cause harm or misinformation.
Intermediaries are also expected to maintain complaint handling systems capable of fast response and verification.
Mandatory Labelling Of AI Generated Content
The rules require clear labelling of AI-generated or altered media so users can distinguish synthetic content from real material. Platforms must disclose when audio, video or images have been digitally manipulated using artificial intelligence tools.
Failure to comply could invite regulatory action under information technology provisions governing online intermediaries.
Online Safety And Platform Accountability
The framework aims to strengthen digital safety by increasing transparency and accountability for hosting services. Officials said the measures are designed to reduce misuse during sensitive events and protect individuals from impersonation or fraud.
The move reflects growing regulatory attention worldwide toward managing risks posed by generative AI technologies.
