Indian Energy Security Top Priority: Government
The government told Parliament that ensuring for Indian Energy Security for the country’s population remains its top priority as global energy markets stay volatile and geopolitical tensions continue to affect crude availability and pricing.
India Energy Security Policy
Union Minister Piyush Goyal said India’s energy strategy is designed to protect consumers from global supply disruptions and price shocks. The government is expanding import sources, increasing domestic production and strengthening long-term supply contracts to maintain stable availability of fuel across sectors.
Officials reiterated that procurement decisions are based on affordability and reliability rather than geopolitical alignment. India imports a large share of its crude requirement, making diversification a core part of national energy planning.
Diversified Oil Import Strategy
India currently sources crude from multiple regions including the Middle East, Russia, the United States and other producers. The government has continued purchasing discounted crude when commercially viable while also exploring alternative suppliers to prevent dependence on any single country.
Authorities said refiners are allowed commercial flexibility to choose grades best suited for their configurations, ensuring cost efficiency in fuel production.
Domestic Production and Renewable Expansion
The government highlighted efforts to increase domestic exploration, expand biofuel blending and accelerate renewable energy adoption to reduce import vulnerability over time. Strategic petroleum reserves and infrastructure expansion are also being strengthened to manage supply disruptions.
