Indian Army to Get Apaches, Navy to Induct Seahawks
The Indian Army is set to receive three Apache AH-64E attack helicopters, while the Indian Navy will induct MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, strengthening the country’s combat and maritime capabilities. The approvals are part of ongoing defence procurement decisions aimed at addressing operational gaps and enhancing force readiness.
The three Apache helicopters were originally ordered for the Indian Air Force but will now be transferred to the Army to meet its urgent operational requirements. The Army already operates Apaches in limited numbers and the induction of additional platforms is expected to significantly improve its attack and close air support capabilities, particularly in high-altitude and border areas.
Navy to Boost Maritime Helicopter Fleet
The Indian Navy will induct MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, a multi-role platform designed for anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, surveillance, and search-and-rescue missions. The Seahawks will operate from frontline warships and are intended to replace ageing helicopters currently in service.
Officials said the induction of the Seahawks will strengthen the Navy’s ability to counter submarine threats and enhance maritime domain awareness in the Indian Ocean Region. The helicopters are equipped with advanced sensors, weapons, and communication systems.
Focus on Operational Readiness
The latest inductions reflect India’s focus on improving combat preparedness across services amid evolving security challenges. Defence planners have emphasised the need for quicker procurement and optimal utilisation of existing assets to maintain operational superiority.
Both the Army and Navy are expected to begin integrating the new helicopters into their operational units once delivery schedules are finalised.
