India Warns Indians to Avoid Cambodia‑Thailand Border
The Indian Embassy in Cambodia has issued a travel advisory urging Indian citizens to avoid travel near the Cambodia–Thailand border due to an ongoing armed conflict between the two countries. The advisory, issued on July 26, comes amid escalating tensions, with reports of civilian casualties, artillery fire, and widespread displacement in the border region.
Embassy Issues Safety Guidelines
The embassy has advised Indian nationals in Cambodia to steer clear of border areas and remain in contact with embassy officials. Emergency helpline numbers and email contacts have been shared for assistance. A similar advisory was issued by the Indian Embassy in Thailand a day earlier, cautioning against travel to seven provinces close to the conflict zone.
Border Conflict Turns Deadly
The current conflict began on July 24 following a landmine explosion that injured Thai soldiers. Since then, hostilities have intensified, with both sides reportedly exchanging heavy fire. At least 31 people have been killed—13 in Cambodia and 18 in Thailand—while more than 130,000 civilians have been displaced from their homes in the affected regions.
Diplomatic Tensions and Global Concern
The situation has led to a diplomatic standoff between the two countries. Both governments have recalled ambassadors and imposed border restrictions. International bodies and regional leaders have urged calm and offered to mediate peace talks, but clashes have continued near key disputed locations such as the Preah Vihear temple area.
India Urges Caution Amid Unrest
While there is no direct threat to Indian nationals, the advisory was issued as a preventive measure to ensure their safety. Citizens currently in Cambodia have been asked to remain vigilant and avoid travel near conflict zones. The embassy continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as needed.
The advisory underscores growing instability in Southeast Asia and highlights the need for travellers to stay informed and follow official instructions during such emergencies.
