India Warns “All Is Not Well” With UN
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has voiced serious concerns over the current state of the United Nations, saying that “all is not well” with the global body. His remarks came during an event marking the UN’s 80th anniversary.
Decision-Making Out of Touch
Jaishankar said that the UN’s decision-making no longer represents the will of its full membership or the realities of today’s world. He cited polarised debates, outdated structures and persistent financial difficulties as factors weakening the organisation’s credibility.
Concerns Over Terror Response
Highlighting terrorism as a key issue, he criticised situations where some member states shield terror groups from accountability. Such actions, he warned, call into question the legitimacy of the multilateral system itself.
India Calls for Reform
Despite the criticism, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting the UN. He stressed that reforms are essential to reflect new geopolitical realities and to ensure the body remains effective in addressing global challenges.
