India Voices Concern Over Venezuela Crisis

India has expressed deep concern over the unfolding situation in Venezuela following recent United States military action in the South American country. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said New Delhi’s primary focus is on the safety and well-being of the Venezuelan people as tensions continue to mount.

India’s Statement on Civilians

Speaking at an international event, Jaishankar emphasised that India is watching developments closely and urged all parties involved to prioritise the protection of civilians. He said India’s concern reflects its longstanding friendly ties with Venezuela and highlighted the importance of ensuring that ordinary citizens are not harmed amid the crisis.

The minister also called for dialogue and peaceful resolution to the situation rather than further escalation. This reflects India’s consistent diplomatic stance that conflicts should be resolved through negotiations and respect for human life.

Background to the Crisis

The situation in Venezuela intensified after US military strikes and the subsequent capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by American forces earlier this month. The action, which was justified by the US on criminal charges, has drawn widespread global criticism and concern from international organisations over civilian safety and respect for international norms.

Other countries and international bodies have also urged restraint and adherence to international law, stressing that humanitarian needs and long-term stability must guide responses to the crisis.

India’s Advisory

India has also advised its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Venezuela and has instructed those in the country to maintain contact with the Indian embassy for their safety. The government is monitoring the situation to ensure that Indian nationals are protected amid the ongoing unrest.
