India-US Trade Talks Continue Amid 50% Tariffs
India and the United States are continuing discussions on a bilateral trade agreement despite recent tensions. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that talks are still active and said India is aiming to finalize a deal by November.
Tariffs Imposed by Washington
The United States has raised tariffs on Indian exports to 50%. The increase combines a 25% reciprocal tariff with an additional 25% penalty, making it one of the steepest tariff rates imposed on any U.S. trading partner. Washington linked the decision to India’s continued import of Russian oil at discounted rates.
India’s Response
Goyal urged calm, stating that India would continue high-level discussions without panic. He emphasized that India remains committed to diplomacy and described the U.S.–India relationship as a critical democratic partnership that can withstand current strains.
Strategic Context
The tariff dispute reflects broader challenges in U.S.–India ties. India argues its energy policy is shaped by national interests and economic necessity, while Washington sees Russian oil purchases as undermining sanctions. Despite disagreements, both countries have signaled their intent to move forward with negotiations.
