India-US Trade Deal Won’t Hurt Farm, Dairy Sectors

The Union government on Tuesday said the proposed India-United States trade deal will not compromise India’s sensitive agriculture and dairy sectors, with detailed provisions of the agreement expected to be shared soon.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India’s core interests, particularly those linked to farmers and the dairy ecosystem, have been fully protected during negotiations. He said speculation around market access in these areas is misplaced and that safeguards have been built into the framework.

Tariff Relief, Details Awaited

The agreement is expected to provide tariff relief for several Indian export sectors, including textiles, engineering goods, leather and gems and jewellery. Discussions with the US are still underway, and a joint announcement outlining sector-specific commitments is likely once talks are concluded.

No Concessions on Sensitive Areas

Officials reiterated that India has not opened up its dairy sector, which remains politically and economically sensitive due to its impact on small farmers and cooperatives. Agriculture-related concerns have also been addressed, with no dilution of existing protections.

The government maintains that the deal aims to expand bilateral trade while preserving domestic interests and strategic priorities.
