India-US Trade Deal: PM Modi Thanks Trump for Tariff Cut
Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked U.S. President Donald Trump after Washington agreed to reduce tariffs on Indian exports to 18 per cent. Modi said the lower tariff will benefit “Made in India” products and expressed gratitude on behalf of India’s 1.4 billion people.
Tariff Reduction and Trade Context
Earlier, the United States had imposed higher reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods, which had affected sectors like textiles, leather and other exports. Under the new agreement, tariff rates on many Indian goods entering the U.S. market will be cut to 18 per cent from previous levels, making Indian products more competitive. India also agreed to ease some trade barriers and expand purchases of U.S. goods, including energy and agricultural items, as part of stronger economic ties.
Reaction and Outlook
Modi described the trade deal as a positive step in deepening India-US economic cooperation. Business groups in India welcomed the move, saying it could boost exports and support manufacturing growth. India’s markets and exporters reacted favourably to the announcement, anticipating increased access to the U.S. market. Both governments said further details on implementation will be worked out in coming months.
