India, US Trade Deal Nearing Closure: Goyal

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on January 31, 2026 that India and the United States are moving towards closure on a comprehensive trade agreement. He said negotiators from both countries are working to resolve outstanding issues ahead of a possible conclusion of talks.

Focus on Market Access and Tariffs

Goyal highlighted that discussions are ongoing on market access, tariff barriers, and agricultural and industrial goods. He said India remains firm on protecting the interests of small farmers and local industries while seeking expanded access for Indian services and products in the US market.

Positive Signals from Both Sides

The minister said both sides have shown a willingness to find common ground, and that unresolved matters will be addressed through continued negotiations. He added that India is negotiating in a way that safeguards domestic priorities while striving for a balanced and mutually beneficial trade pact.
