India, US to Restart Trade Talks This Week

India and the United States will resume trade negotiations this week, after a pause in August. The pause followed the U.S. imposing tariffs up to 50 % on Indian exports in response to India’s continued hydrocarbon imports from Russia.

Focus Areas

New Delhi has pledged to boost energy and gas imports from the U.S., aiming to address American concerns about its Russian oil purchases. The discussions are expected to revisit a proposed first-phase trade agreement, with an ambitious goal to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.

Recent Developments

Talks broke off briefly in August owing to tariff tensions but were restarted in September after a direct call between U.S. President Trump and Indian Prime Minister Modi improved the tone. The U.S. ambassador-designate to India, Sergio Gor, has also held meetings with Indian officials on trade, defense, and technology issues.
