India, US in Talks to “Find Landing Ground”
India and the United States are continuing dialogue over a proposed bilateral trade agreement, with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal saying that both sides hope to “find a landing ground” on key issues. He confirmed that discussions are ongoing at various levels even amid a U.S. government shutdown.
Trade Deal Timeline and Challenges
Goyal indicated that meeting a November 2025 deadline for concluding the agreement remains a possibility, though he acknowledged the shutdown could affect scheduling. He also said India is negotiating free trade agreements (FTAs) with other partners like the European Union, while safeguarding interests of farmers, the dairy sector, and religious sensitivities.
Sensitive Issues and Red Lines
India has insisted that its “red lines” must be respected in any pact. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has stated that the U.S. must recognize these bottom lines while crafting a deal. Key areas of contention include tariffs, agricultural market access, and trade in sensitive goods.
Diplomatic and Economic Stakes
The proposed agreement aims to boost India–U.S. trade and investment. However, experts say success hinges on resolving major disagreements while preserving India’s domestic priorities. The coming weeks will be critical for bridging gaps and finalizing terms that satisfy both sides.
