India Upgrades Mission in Kabul to Full Embassy

The Indian government announced the upgrade of its diplomatic presence in Afghanistan by elevating its Technical Mission in Kabul to full embassy status with immediate effect.

Move Follows Afghan Minister’s Visit

The decision follows the recent visit of Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to India, during which the Indian External Affairs Ministry indicated the upgrade would be forthcoming.

Scope and Significance

While India has not formally recognised the Taliban-led government in Kabul, the move signals a substantive deepening of bilateral engagement. The embassy will focus on development, humanitarian aid and capacity-building in Afghanistan.

Diplomatic Nuances

India will not immediately appoint a full ambassador; a chargé d’affaires will head the mission, reflecting Delhi’s cautious approach. Analysts view the upgrade as a strategic adjustment amid shifting regional dynamics.
