India Unveils First Indigenous Chip at Semicon India 2025
At the Semicon India 2025 summit in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described semiconductors as the “digital diamonds” of the 21st century. He said these chips, though small, are powerful engines of global innovation and economic growth. Modi added that “India’s smallest chip will drive the world’s biggest change,” underscoring India’s rising role in semiconductor manufacturing.
First Fully Indigenous Chip Unveiled
The summit also marked the launch of Vikram-32, India’s first fully indigenous 32-bit processor, developed by ISRO’s Semiconductor Lab. Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw showcased the chip along with test wafers from four semiconductor projects currently backed by the government. The unveiling was presented as proof of India’s growing design and development capacity.
“Designed & Made in India, Trusted by the World”
Modi emphasized his vision of technological self-reliance with the phrase: “Designed in India, Made in India, Trusted by the World.” He also introduced the next phase of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM 2.0), which will bring reforms, streamlined approvals, and support for chip parks. With the global semiconductor market already valued at over US$600 billion and projected to surpass US$1 trillion, India aims to position itself as a significant player.
