India to Train Mongolia’s Border Forces

India has announced a capacity-building programme for Mongolia’s border security forces, strengthening defence and security cooperation. The initiative was revealed during the state visit of Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, marking 70 years of diplomatic ties and a decade of strategic partnership.

Defence Attaché and MoUs

As part of the agreement, India will post a Defence Attaché at its embassy in Ulaanbaatar. Both sides also signed 10 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering areas such as immigration, geology, digital infrastructure, and cultural exchange.

Strategic Goals and Energy Ties

The two nations reiterated their commitment to a free and rules-based Indo-Pacific and pledged to promote the concerns of the Global South in global forums. India also extended support for Mongolia’s energy independence by funding an oil refinery project with a $1.7 billion line of credit, the largest overseas development aid project undertaken by India.

Cultural and Educational Links

Beyond defence and trade, the countries agreed to expand cultural and educational exchanges. India will introduce e-visas for Mongolian nationals, while Nalanda University will partner with Gandan Monastery in Ulaanbaatar to foster academic and cultural collaboration.
