India To Review Teesta Developments

India has said it will take all related developments into account while shaping its approach to the Teesta river issue, as Bangladesh and China move forward with discussions on the proposed Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project.

India Teesta River Position

The Ministry of External Affairs said India’s development assistance for projects in Bangladesh is guided by a mutually agreed roadmap that is reviewed regularly.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said New Delhi had already conveyed its views on the Teesta river project to Bangladesh. He added that India would factor all related developments into its overall approach to the issue.

Bangladesh China Teesta Project Talks

The remarks came after Bangladesh and China discussed the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project during Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China.

China’s involvement in the Teesta project is being watched closely in New Delhi because of the river’s strategic and geographic importance. The Teesta originates in the eastern Himalayas, flows through Sikkim and West Bengal, and enters Bangladesh, where it supports irrigation and livelihoods.

Siliguri Corridor Strategic Concern

The Teesta basin is located near India’s sensitive Siliguri Corridor, a narrow land link connecting the Indian mainland with the northeastern states. This has added a strategic dimension to the proposed river management project.

Jaiswal also responded to questions about Bangladesh’s plans involving Mongla Port and possible fighter jet purchases from China. He said India pays attention to such issues and takes appropriate steps when required.

Bangladesh has said progress was made on the Teesta project during recent talks with China, including support for expediting the feasibility study.
