India to Resume Postal Services to U.S.

India will restart all categories of international postal services to the United States from October 15, 2025, ending a nearly two-month suspension. The decision follows the implementation of a new system to collect customs duty in line with U.S. import rules.

Reason for Suspension

Services were halted in August 2025 after the U.S. scrapped the de minimis exemption, which earlier allowed low-value postal parcels to enter duty-free. With the new rules, all items bound for the U.S., regardless of value, now require duty payments. India temporarily suspended postal services until a framework was created to handle these duties.

New Duty-Paid System

Under the revised arrangement, India Post will collect a 50% customs duty on the declared value of consignments sent to the U.S. Authorities clarified that customers will not face additional service charges beyond the duty itself.

Strategic Importance

The restoration of services comes just before India and the U.S. resume high-level trade talks. The move is expected to benefit exporters, especially small businesses, e-commerce operators, and artisans, by stabilizing logistics and ensuring smoother parcel deliveries across borders.
