India to Play Pakistan in Asia Cup Despite Backlash

The BCCI has officially confirmed that India will play Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, with the match scheduled for September 14 in the UAE. The announcement came after growing demands from various public figures and citizens to boycott the fixture in light of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and the ongoing Operation Sindoor. Despite strong emotional opposition, the cricket board stated its commitment to tournament obligations.

Government Clarifies It Cannot Intervene

The Indian government clarified that it cannot prevent the BCCI from participating in the Asia Cup, as the board is not under government control. The Sports Ministry pointed out that in the absence of a formal sports regulation law, decisions related to participation in international tournaments rest solely with the BCCI.

Former Cricketers and Veterans Boycott

Earlier this month, several former Indian cricketers, including Shikhar Dhawan and Yuvraj Singh, withdrew from a veterans’ tournament semifinal against Pakistan. Their action led to the cancellation of the match and drew widespread praise, fueling calls for the senior Indian team to take a similar stand in the Asia Cup.

Players and Politicians Criticize Decision

Voices like Suresh Raina, Mohammad Azharuddin, and Manoj Tiwary strongly criticized the BCCI’s stance. Many accused the board of double standards, questioning why the veterans’ match was boycotted in protest but the Asia Cup match is being allowed. They urged the board to prioritize national sentiment over commercial interests.

India Could Face Pakistan Three Times

India and Pakistan are in the same group, which means they could meet up to three times during the tournament—once in the group stage, potentially again in the Super Four, and possibly in the final. A boycott would give Pakistan a walkover and impact India’s standing in the tournament.
