India to Impose 30% Duty on Yellow Pea Imports
The Indian government will impose a 30 % import duty on yellow peas starting November 1, 2025, in a move aimed at protecting domestic producers from a flood of cheap imports. Shipments with a bill of lading dated October 31 or earlier will be exempt from the duty.
Background to the Decision
Earlier this year, the government had extended duty-free imports of yellow peas until March 31, 2026, to help control retail prices and ensure supply. However, a sharp rise in imports—especially from Canada and Russia—suppressed domestic prices and prompted farmer protests. The reversal now reintroduces costs for importers and signals support for local producers.
Market Impact and Outlook
India is the world’s largest importer of yellow peas, but the new duty is expected to sharpen focus on domestic farming and processing. While consumers could see higher prices, the measure is designed to help local farmers recover margins and encourage supply-chain resilience. Exporters and importers will likely adjust their sourcing strategies in response to the added cost.
