India To Consider Proposal For 114 Rafale Jets
The Centre is expected to soon consider the Indian Air Force’s proposal to procure 114 Rafale fighter jets from France as part of its long-pending fighter acquisition plan. The proposal is likely to be taken up by the Defence Acquisition Council, which clears major defence purchases.
Deal Structure And Scope
The planned acquisition is expected to follow a government-to-government framework. A limited number of aircraft are likely to be delivered in fly-away condition, while the remaining jets would be manufactured or assembled in India with technology transfer and domestic industry participation. The deal is estimated to be among India’s largest defence procurements in value, though final costs will depend on configuration, weapons and support packages.
Why The IAF Needs The Jets
The Indian Air Force is facing a steady decline in squadron strength as older aircraft are phased out. The additional Rafale jets are intended to plug critical gaps and enhance operational readiness, particularly in a challenging regional security environment.
