India is expected to commission its third indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine by the summer of 2026, further strengthening its strategic maritime deterrence. The submarine, INS Aridhaman, is currently in the final stages of trials and is likely to be inducted into service in the coming months.

Indian Navy To Commission Third Indigenous Nuclear Submarine

The Indian Navy is preparing to induct INS Aridhaman, the third submarine under the Arihant-class programme. Constructed at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam, the submarine represents a major milestone in India’s indigenous defence manufacturing efforts. It has reportedly completed extensive harbour and sea trials, with final operational clearances underway before formal commissioning.

INS Aridhaman is understood to incorporate several upgrades over its predecessors, including improved design features and expanded operational capabilities.

INS Aridhaman Missile Capability And Nuclear Propulsion

As a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Aridhaman is designed to carry submarine-launched ballistic missiles. The vessel is expected to deploy longer-range missiles compared to earlier platforms in the class, enhancing India’s underwater strike reach. Nuclear propulsion enables the submarine to remain submerged for extended durations, improving survivability and stealth during deterrence patrols.

This capability strengthens India’s assured second-strike potential, a key component of its nuclear doctrine.

With INS Aridhaman’s commissioning, India will operate three indigenous nuclear ballistic missile submarines, reinforcing the sea-based leg of its nuclear triad. The development marks steady progress in expanding strategic naval assets and sustaining credible minimum deterrence.
