India to Approve ₹45,000 Crore Deal for 156 Indigenous LCHs

India is preparing to approve a major defense acquisition worth ₹45,000 crore for the purchase of 156 indigenous Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This procurement is poised to significantly enhance the aerial combat and high-altitude operational capabilities of both the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force (IAF), aligning with the broader goals of defense self-reliance and modernization.

Distribution and Tactical Capabilities

Under the proposal, 90 LCH units are slated for the Indian Army, while the remaining 66 will be deployed with the IAF. The LCH, named ‘Prachand,’ is specifically designed for high-altitude warfare and has already proven its capability to operate at elevations above 16,000 feet, including in challenging terrains like Siachen and Eastern Ladakh.

The helicopter is equipped to carry out a variety of missions such as neutralizing enemy air defenses, engaging armored columns, targeting low-speed aerial threats including drones, and providing close air support. Its advanced avionics, agility, and firepower make it a critical addition to India’s combat fleet, especially in sensitive border zones.

Strengthening ‘Make in India’ and Strategic Autonomy

The move reflects India’s push towards strengthening its indigenous defense manufacturing sector. By choosing HAL’s domestically developed platform, the government reinforces its commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, aiming to reduce dependency on foreign defense imports and promote self-reliant production.

This large-scale procurement is also expected to generate employment and stimulate investment in ancillary defense manufacturing, creating a ripple effect across the sector. Final clearance is expected soon from the Cabinet Committee on Security, signaling one of the most significant indigenous defense procurements in recent years.

The addition of these 156 combat helicopters will not only amplify India’s defense readiness but also mark a major leap in homegrown aerospace technology and tactical aviation capabilities.
