India Tests AI-Enabled Negev LMG at 14,000 Feet Altitude

India has successfully conducted field trials of an AI-enhanced Negev Light Machine Gun (LMG) at an altitude of 14,000 feet, marking a significant breakthrough in the country’s push for autonomous combat capabilities. The test was carried out in extreme terrain and weather conditions, with the weapon system demonstrating advanced target detection, precision engagement, and independent surveillance—all managed with minimal human intervention.

AI LMG for high-altitude warfare

The AI-integrated Negev LMG features a smart targeting system that combines optical and thermal imaging with artificial intelligence to detect, distinguish, and neutralize threats. The weapon’s onboard AI module can perform real-time decision-making, automatically adjusting for range, wind, and temperature variables. It also enables the system to function with sensor fusion, enhancing accuracy and threat prioritization under complex battlefield scenarios.

Engineers behind the system confirmed its successful operation at high altitudes, where traditional firearms often face reliability issues. The AI-LMG maintained full functionality, stability, and target-lock precision during the test, proving its readiness for deployment in forward and remote locations where troop presence is challenging.

Negev trials and tactical applications

Built on the standard Israeli Negev LMG platform and indigenously modified with AI components, the system supports remote operation via encrypted communication. It is capable of operating autonomously when paired with unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), tripods, or stationary weapon mounts.

Its intended applications include border surveillance, protection of critical infrastructure, anti-drone response, base perimeter defense, and convoy protection—especially in conflict-prone or high-risk zones where reducing soldier exposure is paramount.

Autonomous warfare and strategic vision

This project is in line with India’s broader strategic vision to enhance indigenous defence innovation under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The successful test positions India among a select group of nations fielding AI-backed autonomous weapons tailored for high-altitude environments.

Military analysts believe such systems are essential for India’s frontier readiness, especially given the terrain challenges along the northern borders. The integration of AI not only offers precision firepower but also significantly lowers cognitive and physical load on soldiers during prolonged engagements in hostile and remote regions.

The AI-powered Negev LMG is expected to play a pivotal role in transforming India’s battlefield strategy—from troop-intensive patrols to sensor-driven, autonomous overwatch solutions that maintain vigilance 24/7 with minimal human fatigue.
