India Tariffs Cut To 10% After US Court Ruling
The United States will impose a 10 percent tariff on imports from India following a US Supreme Court ruling that curtailed President Donald Trump’s broader tariff powers. The move comes after the court found that parts of the administration’s earlier global tariff framework exceeded executive authority.
US Supreme Court Blocks Trump Tariff Authority
The US Supreme Court ruled that the President overstepped legal limits while using emergency economic powers to introduce sweeping global tariffs. The judgment invalidated key portions of the previous tariff structure, prompting the administration to introduce a revised and temporary framework.
Officials confirmed that the earlier higher tariff rates imposed under the contested authority will no longer apply in their previous form.
India Tariff Reduced To 10 Percent
Under the updated framework, goods imported from India will now face a uniform 10 percent tariff. The revised rate replaces previously announced or negotiated higher duties. The 10 percent tariff is expected to remain in effect for a limited duration under alternative statutory provisions.
Certain sectors may continue to receive exemptions depending on trade classifications and existing arrangements.
India-US Trade Deal Status After Ruling
President Donald Trump stated that the interim India-US trade understanding remains intact despite the court’s decision. The revised tariff structure is being implemented within the boundaries set by the court ruling and does not automatically cancel bilateral commitments.
The development marks a significant shift in US trade policy enforcement while maintaining ongoing trade engagement between Washington and New Delhi.
