India Targets World’s Fastest Satcom Rollout by 2028
India is preparing to launch the fastest satellite communication (satcom) rollout in the world, a goal underscored by Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. “India is gearing up for the fastest in the world Satcom roll-out,” he said, outlining the government’s ambitious vision to leverage satellite technology for deepening digital connectivity across the country.
The Minister emphasized the transformative impact this move will have on rural and remote areas, positioning satcom as a critical tool to complement terrestrial telecom networks. As India eyes this aggressive expansion, it aims to not only bridge the digital divide but also create a strong foundation for future tech-driven growth.
Satellite Communication Market to Hit $20 Billion
India’s satellite communication sector is set to witness explosive growth. From a current market size of $2.3 billion, projections estimate the sector will scale up to $20 billion by 2028. This rapid expansion mirrors India’s earlier achievement of executing the world’s fastest 5G rollout, reinforcing the country’s reputation for quick technology adoption.
Scindia also noted, “India already has the fastest rollout of 5G, and this is just the beginning.” The satcom rollout is expected to follow suit, creating new avenues in telecommunications, education, healthcare, and governance for underserved areas.
Policy Push to Accelerate Satcom Rollout
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed allocating satcom spectrum through the administrative route at a fee of 4% of adjusted gross revenue (AGR). This recommendation is aimed at streamlining approvals and encouraging more players to enter the Indian satcom market.
Following TRAI’s proposals, the government has already received multiple applications from companies eager to begin satcom services. These include both Indian firms and global giants, highlighting the commercial potential of the Indian satcom landscape.
Major Global Players Eye Indian Satcom Sector
India’s growing satcom infrastructure has drawn the attention of leading international tech companies. Elon Musk’s Starlink has received a Letter of Intent from the Department of Telecommunications. Other key players preparing for entry include Amazon’s Project Kuiper, Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb, and Reliance Jio’s joint venture with SES.
These companies are poised to bring Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks to Indian skies, enabling high-speed internet services even in regions where traditional networks fail to reach.
India’s Affordable Internet Model as a Benchmark
India’s digital model, built on affordability and wide access, is a cornerstone of the satcom vision. “The cost of data in India has come down from ₹287 per GB in 2014 to ₹9 per GB now,” said Scindia. Such drastic cost reductions ensure that technological advancements remain inclusive and accessible.
As the country races to lead in the global satcom space, its approach balances innovation, affordability, and inclusive growth. The rollout will also create significant employment opportunities and open up new markets for digital services.
With a policy framework geared towards rapid deployment and a focus on national inclusion, India’s satcom ambitions are on track to redefine how the country connects its people.
