India Suspends Postal Services to U.S. After Customs Rule

The Department of Posts has announced a temporary suspension of most international postal services from India to the United States effective August 25, 2025. The move follows a new U.S. customs order that eliminates the duty-free de minimis exemption on items worth up to USD 800. Starting August 29, all packages sent to the U.S. will attract customs duties.

Items Still Allowed

Despite the suspension, some categories remain exempt. Letters, documents, and small gift items valued at USD 100 or less will continue to be accepted for dispatch. These will not face additional customs duties and will be delivered as usual.

Why Services Are Affected

The U.S. customs order requires only “qualified parties” approved by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to collect and remit duties on incoming shipments. However, airlines that carry Indian postal consignments to the U.S. have refused to accept parcels after August 25, citing uncertainty over compliance. This operational gap has forced India Post to suspend services temporarily.

Efforts to Resume Operations

India Post said it is working with the U.S. Postal Service, CBP, and other stakeholders to resolve the issue. Officials assured customers that services would be restored once operational clarity is achieved. Refunds are being offered for consignments already booked that cannot be delivered.

Impact on Customers

The suspension is expected to cause delays for individuals and businesses that rely on postal services for sending goods and parcels to the U.S. Logistics experts believe private couriers may temporarily benefit, though they too will face compliance with the new customs rules.
