India Surpasses US and Europe in Locomotive Production

India has achieved a major milestone in the railway sector by surpassing the combined locomotive production of the United States and Europe. The country has manufactured over 1,400 locomotives this year, marking a significant advancement in its engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

India’s Locomotive Production Milestone

India now produces more locomotives than the US and Europe combined, with over 1,400 units manufactured this year. This achievement reflects India’s growing dominance in railway manufacturing and its ability to meet increasing domestic and international demand.

Expansion of Railway Exports

India is rapidly emerging as a global supplier of railway equipment. Metro coaches manufactured in the country are being exported to Australia, while railway bogies are being supplied to multiple nations, including the UK, France, Australia, and Saudi Arabia. Additionally, propulsion systems are being sent to European countries like France, Germany, and Italy, as well as to Mexico and Romania. Passenger coaches are also being exported to countries such as Mozambique, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, showcasing India’s expanding footprint in the global railway industry.

Enhancements in Railway Safety

Railway safety has seen significant improvements, with the number of consequential accidents decreasing sharply from 473 in 2000 to just 48 in 2022-23. This reflects the implementation of enhanced safety protocols and upgraded railway infrastructure, ensuring safer travel for passengers.

Financial Health and Passenger Fare Subsidy

Despite subsidizing passenger fares by 47%, Indian Railways has maintained financial stability. The total expenditure stands at ₹2.75 lakh crore, while revenue has reached ₹2.78 lakh crore. The financial strength of Indian Railways is supported by increased freight operations and government backing, allowing continued investment in modernization and passenger affordability.

Global Standing in Freight Operations

Indian Railways is on track to become one of the world’s top three freight carriers by the end of the fiscal year, handling an estimated 1.6 billion tons of cargo. This highlights the organization’s growing efficiency and capability in freight transport, strengthening its role in global logistics.

Conclusion

India’s rise in locomotive production, expanding railway exports, and improvements in safety and financial health position the country as a key player in the global railway sector. These achievements underscore India’s commitment to infrastructure development and its growing influence in international rail transportation.
