India Surpasses Germany to Become Third-Largest Producer of Wind and Solar Electricity

In a significant achievement, India has surpassed Germany to become the world’s third-largest generator of electricity from wind and solar sources. In 2024, India contributed 10% of its total electricity from wind and solar power, part of a global trend where renewable sources accounted for 15% of global electricity generation.

India’s Renewable Energy Growth

India’s renewable energy capacity continues to expand rapidly, with the country adding 24 GW of solar capacity in 2024—more than double the previous year’s additions. This growth places India as the third-largest solar market globally, behind China and the United States. The country’s clean energy sector now accounts for 22% of its total electricity generation, with wind and solar together making up a significant portion. Hydropower also plays a crucial role, contributing 8% to the total.

Global Renewable Energy Expansion

Globally, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar have seen a record growth in 2024, with solar alone contributing 474 TWh to the global electricity supply. This growth is part of a larger trend toward sustainable energy solutions, which have been expanding for over two decades. India’s rapid shift toward renewables highlights its commitment to combating climate change and promoting sustainable development.

Future Outlook for India’s Renewable Sector

India’s strong focus on expanding its renewable energy infrastructure is not only helping the country meet its climate goals but also positioning it as a leader in the global energy transition. With its large population and growing economy, India is poised to remain a major player in the global renewable energy market in the years to come.

This achievement underscores India’s growing role in the global energy transition, with the country increasingly seen as a hub for clean energy production and innovation.
