India Summons Bangladesh Envoy Over Security Concerns
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has summoned the Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, M. Riaz Hamidullah, to express concern over a security threat directed at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. The meeting took place in New Delhi on Wednesday, with Indian officials emphasising that the safety of diplomatic staff and missions must be ensured.
Reason for Diplomatic Protest
The MEA’s action follows reports of a threat to the Indian mission in Dhaka linked to recent remarks made by a political leader in Bangladesh. Indian officials said they raised the matter with the Bangladesh envoy and sought clarification on steps being taken to protect the Indian mission and its personnel. New Delhi stressed that such threats are unacceptable and that host countries have a responsibility to guarantee the security of foreign diplomatic missions.
Bangladesh Response and Cooperation
The Bangladesh High Commissioner responded by reaffirming his government’s commitment to strong bilateral ties with India. In his remarks, he underlined that Bangladesh remains committed to regional peace, security and prosperity, and that ensuring diplomatic safety is a priority. The envoy highlighted the importance of continuous engagement and cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
Bilateral Relations and Ongoing Dialogue
India and Bangladesh have deep historical, cultural and economic links, and both sides have maintained regular high-level dialogue on issues ranging from trade and connectivity to security cooperation. Despite occasional tensions, diplomatic channels continue to be used to resolve concerns. Officials on both sides indicated that the security matter would be addressed jointly to maintain trust and cooperation.
