India Stresses Consumer Priority Amid Oil Claim

New Delhi reiterated that its foremost concern is protecting the interests of Indian consumers, following former President Donald Trump’s claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him India would stop buying Russian oil.

Ministry’s statement on energy policy

The Ministry of External Affairs said India’s import policies are guided by the goal of ensuring stable energy prices and secure supplies. Officials emphasized that decisions on sourcing are based on market conditions and national interest.

Energy security and diversification goals

According to the statement, New Delhi’s “twin goals” are to maintain energy security and affordability. It noted that India has been progressively broadening its energy procurement sources over the past decade.

Trade and diplomacy context

Trump’s assertion has not been confirmed by the Indian government. India continues to import a significant share of its crude oil from Russia, leveraging discounted rates even amid global pressure to sever ties.
