India Slams Pakistan at UN Over Kashmir and Water Treaty

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister brought up the Kashmir dispute and the Indus Waters Treaty during a session at the UN Security Council, alleging that India’s recent suspension of the water-sharing agreement posed a threat to the lives of over 240 million Pakistanis.

India Rejects Allegations and Criticises Double Standards

India firmly rejected Pakistan’s claims, calling them a smokescreen to deflect attention from its own actions. India’s representative at the UN described Pakistan’s statements as hypocritical and pointed out that Pakistan preaches peace while supporting terrorism. The Indian envoy reminded the Council that issues like Kashmir and the Indus Treaty are bilateral matters and not for international adjudication.

Accusation of Treaty Misuse by Pakistan

India accused Pakistan of misusing the treaty and acting in bad faith. It pointed out that while India continues to honour its responsibilities under the agreement, Pakistan has not reciprocated the same spirit. India’s representative highlighted that Pakistan had blocked various infrastructure projects permitted under the treaty and ignored repeated terror provocations originating from its soil.

‘Serial Borrower from IMF’ Jibe

Taking a sharp dig at Pakistan’s economic situation, India branded its neighbour a “serial borrower from the IMF,” questioning how a country dependent on repeated international bailouts could lecture others on treaty violations and peacekeeping.

Treaty Suspension Triggered by Terror Attack

India’s decision to suspend aspects of the Indus Waters Treaty came after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam. India blamed the attack on Pakistan-based militants and argued that national security must take precedence. The suspension included halting data exchanges and planning new water projects on Indian-controlled rivers.

Diplomatic Stand-Off Escalates

This latest face-off highlights the growing diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan. While Islamabad continues to push the Kashmir issue internationally, India insists on bilateral mechanisms and accuses Pakistan of weaponising international platforms to distract from its internal failures.
