India Signs Record Tejas Jet Deal With HAL
The Indian government has signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to procure 97 Tejas Mk-1A fighter jets. The deal is valued at ₹62,370 crore, making it the largest procurement for a domestic aircraft to date.
Jet Mix And Deliveries
The order includes 68 single-seat fighters and 29 twin-seat trainer variants, along with associated equipment and systems. Deliveries are slated to begin in 2027 and will continue over six years.
Background And Approval
The Cabinet Committee on Security approved the deal on August 19, 2025. The acquisition is part of India’s push for self-reliance in defense and modernizing its air force. The earlier contract from 2021 for 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets, worth ₹46,898 crore, has faced delays.
Strategic Importance
This order is a significant step in strengthening India’s indigenous manufacturing capabilities under the “Make in India” initiative. The deal aims to reduce dependence on foreign aircraft and enhance national security readiness.
Challenges Ahead
While the deal is finalised, timely delivery depends on HAL’s capacity, supply of engines and subsystems, and overcoming previous delays. Performance and integration with India’s existing fleet will be closely watched.
