India Shuts Two More Visa Centres in Bangladesh
India has closed two additional visa application centres in Bangladesh, citing a worsening security situation and concerns over the safety of staff and applicants. The centres in Rajshahi and Khulna have been shut temporarily as authorities review conditions on the ground.
Security Concerns Behind the Move
Indian officials said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure following recent incidents and protests that raised concerns about security near Indian diplomatic facilities in Bangladesh. New Delhi has conveyed its concerns to Bangladeshi authorities and emphasised the need to ensure the safety of Indian missions and related establishments in line with international diplomatic obligations.
Impact on Visa Applicants
The closure of the Rajshahi and Khulna centres has disrupted visa services for applicants in those regions, including students, patients and business travellers. Notices issued at the centres stated that appointments would be rescheduled once the security situation improves. Indian authorities said updates on the resumption of services would be shared through official channels.
Broader Diplomatic Context
The shutdown follows earlier adjustments to visa services in Dhaka, reflecting heightened caution amid broader diplomatic strain between India and Bangladesh. Officials said the closures are temporary and subject to regular security assessments.
India has indicated that visa operations will resume once adequate assurances on safety are in place, underlining that the step is purely driven by security considerations rather than any change in visa policy.
