India Sends Warships and Relief Teams to Flood-Hit Sri Lanka
India has launched a major relief operation after severe flooding and landslides hit Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah. Under Operation Sagar Bandhu, India deployed warships, aircraft, and rescue teams to assist local authorities as the death toll and displacement numbers continue to rise.
INS Vikrant Pressed Into Rescue Operations
India’s aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, which was already docked in Colombo on a scheduled visit, has been diverted to support relief activities. Naval helicopters from the carrier are delivering emergency supplies and helping evacuate stranded civilians. Another naval ship, INS Udaygiri, has transported essential food items, medicines, and drinking water as part of the first relief consignment.
India Expands Humanitarian Support
Officials confirmed that several tonnes of dry rations, fresh food, and emergency aid have been dispatched. Additional aircraft and rapid response teams remain on standby as Sri Lanka continues to face widespread damage to homes, roads, and public infrastructure.
Relief Efforts Continue
India’s swift response highlights its commitment to standing by Sri Lanka during one of its most severe natural disasters in recent years. Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing as weather conditions slowly stabilise.
