India Seeks Assurance from China on Traveller Safety
India has asked China to provide clear assurances that Indian citizens travelling through Chinese airports will not face harassment. The demand follows an incident where an Indian national from Arunachal Pradesh was detained and questioned during transit at a Shanghai airport. The passenger was reportedly held despite holding valid travel documents, prompting strong concern in New Delhi.
MEA raises the issue
The Ministry of External Affairs said the matter was taken up with the Chinese authorities through diplomatic channels. India stressed that international norms for transit passengers must be respected, and no traveller should be singled out because of their place of birth or identity. Officials said such incidents are “unacceptable” and create confusion and distress for ordinary travellers.
Advisory for the public
India has also issued a travel advisory, asking citizens to exercise caution when travelling to or through China. The advisory highlights the need for preparedness, clarity on documents, and awareness of local regulations. At the same time, the government said it expects Chinese authorities to prevent any recurrence of similar situations.
Dispute adds to tension
The episode comes at a time when relations between the two countries remain strained due to boundary disputes and security issues. India reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of the country and any questioning of this fact is politically sensitive. Officials said harassment of travellers is “not conducive” to improving ties.
