India Says It Will Engage Constructively After Hasina Verdict

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on 17 November 2025 that it has taken note of the death sentence handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal‑1 Bangladesh (ICT-1) to former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The MEA emphasised that as a close neighbour, India “remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusion and stability”. It further added: “We will always engage constructively with all stakeholders.”

Bangladesh Verdict And India’s Response

Sheikh Hasina was tried in absentia by the tribunal and given a death sentence for crimes against humanity related to a 2024 student-led uprising. India’s reaction stopped short of supporting extradition demands and chose instead to focus on continued diplomatic engagement. Extradition has not been committed to by New Delhi.

Regional Implications

The MEA statement signals New Delhi’s cautious approach to a sensitive situation in neighbouring Bangladesh. Maintaining bilateral ties while emphasising democratic and inclusive practices appears to be the strategy. The decision not to mention extradition indicates India’s effort to balance legal obligations with regional stability.
